The Root of Our Recipe

We make our soap using the cold-process method, allowing the ingredients to slowly transform into a hard, long-lasting bar. It's a slower approach than commercial soap production, but we believe good things take time.

What is tallow and why do we use it?

Tallow is rendered fat from ruminant animals like cows, bears, and deer. We use beef tallow for soap because its fatty acids are very similar to the natural oils in human skin. This creates a gentle, nourishing bar that produces a rich, creamy lather and lasts a long time in the shower.

Benefits of tallow

    Tallow contains oleic, palmitic, and stearic acids—the same fatty acids found in human sebum (your skin's natural oil). This unique fatty acid profile is one reason it has been valued in traditional soapmaking for generations.

    Tallow creates a dense, durable bar that wears down slowly. With proper care, our bars typically last about a month of daily full-body use, and up to four months when paired with a soap saver bag.

    Tallow creates a velvety lather that transforms an everyday shower into a small ritual.

  • Eco-Friendly

    Tallow makes use of a food-industry byproduct that might otherwise go to waste, offering an alternative to palm-oil-based soap.

Why is our recipe made with multiple oils?

No single oil makes the perfect bar of soap. Each oil contributes different qualities, so we've carefully balanced six oils to create a bar that's hard, creamy, bubbly, and long-lasting.

  • Tallow provides hardness and a creamy lather
  • Olive oil contributes to a gentle cleanse
  • Coconut oil boosts bubbles
  • Shea butter adds richness
  • Castor oil stabilizes lather
  • Rice bran oil rounds everything out

The result is a bar that lasts a month or more, and up to four months in a soap saver bag!

Does tallow smell?

No! We use responsibly sourced suet tallow, a premium form of tallow prized for soapmaking.  It’s purified through the rendering process, which makes it clean and odorless before we begin soapmaking.

Why use tallow over palm oil?

While many handcrafted soaps rely primarily on palm oil, we chose tallow because it creates the qualities we value most: a hard, long-lasting bar with a rich, creamy lather. We’re also using an existing food-industry byproduct rather than creating demand for a new raw material. This helps maximize the use of the whole animal and reduces reliance on ingredients with greater environmental impacts.
